The Sacred Meanings of Chakra Symbols

Carol Tuttle 12-17

The seven chakras are spinning energy centers in the body. Each chakra is associated with a particular physical and psychological aspect of a person, a color, a sound frequency and a sacred symbol.

The chakras are spinning energy centers in the body.Root Chakra: the foundation of the physical body. It is the seat of inherited beliefs, self-preservation (fight or flight instincts), identification with the physical world and survival. A healthy root chakra helps you have a solid connection to family and community, enjoy financial security, readily take action and feel happy and alive. It governs the immune and skeletal systems. When the root chakra is weak or unbalanced, you may have adrenal, colon and kidney problems and weakness in the legs and spine. You may also suffer from anxiety, greed, selfishness, lack of confidence and failure to follow through. Heal the root chakra by exercise, dance, being in nature and cooking and cleaning.

The root chakra is symbolized by the red Maladhara mandala, fire and snakes and dragons and its element is earth.

Sacral Chakra: relationships, sexuality, creativity, inspiration, emotions, passion, cooperation and control. This chakra governs the reproductive organs, liver, spleen, bladder and kidneys. A healthy, open sacral chakra ensures joy/zest for life, fertility, compassion, tolerance, patience, energy, creativity, imagination, friendliness, focus and success. Fertility is meant both in the reproductive sense as well as imagination (the seed of all achievement is generated in the imagination, and its manifestation requires passion). When it is unbalanced, you may have sexual problems and, infertility, bladder problems, be self-centered, overly sensitive and unable to achieve goals (or be excessively ambition). Social interaction and laughter help balance the sacral chakra.

The sacral chakra is represented by an orange Svadhistthana mandala, a fish, and its element is water.

Solar Plexus Chakra: personal power, self-mastery, self-acceptance, self-esteem and the energy to take action. It influences the digestive system, muscles, metabolism and the nervous system. This chakra allows you to pick up vibrations from people. A healthy solar plexus chakra helps you have a good relationship with the world around you, helping you achieve your goals, and then relax and enjoy the achievements. A weak solar plexus chakra means digestive problems, anger, frustration and authority issues. Balance this chakra by being in the sunshine, and meditating while gazing into a fire (campfire or candle).

The symbol for the solar plexus chakra is the yellow Manipura madala and birds, and its element is fire.

Heart Chakra: this chakra bridges the lower chakras (physical world) and higher chakras (spirit world). A healthy heart chakra is driven by love and influences your ability to forgive, feel compassion and empathy, to trust, and be at ease. It helps you connect with nature and the plant world. Physically, the heart chakra influences the heart, lungs, cardiovascular, endocrine and immune systems. When it’s healthy, you balance the physical and spiritual world. You desire to help others, you’re at peace with yourself and you are often very  prosperous and altruistic. If this chakra is unbalanced, you have heart and lung problems, you’re emotionally unstable, feel unloved or unable to love, suspicious and obsessive. Heal the heart chakra by sitting outdoors, in Nature, deeply breathing in the air. The symbol for the heart chakra is a green Anahata mandala and four-legged mammals, and its element is air.

You can wear chakra symbols on your body as reminders and for balancing.Throat Chakra: this chakra governs choice, self-expression (including artistic expression), good judgment, wisdom, truthfulness, dreaming, manifesting, meditation and communication. Physically, this chakra influences the mouth, throat, thyroid, teeth and immune system. A healthy throat chakra allows for free communication (speaking your truth) both with your higher self and with other people. An unbalanced throat chakra result in thyroid problems, inability to speak up, ear problems, speech impediments, depression, resistance to change, shyness and a desire to control through deceit and dishonesty. To unblock this chakra, sing, chant, practice breath meditation and meditate outdoors.

The throat chakra is represented by a blue Vishuddha mandala, the human race and its element is ether.

Third Eye Chakra: the seat of intuition, divine wisdom and truth. Physically, the third eye chakra influences the eyes, nose, central nervous system, brain and the pituitary gland. When it’s balanced, you are able to visualize things that have not yet manifested, you have a sense of control over your life and the courage to follow your dreams. You easily connect and communicate with your spirit guides and Higher Self. You are intuitive, focused, imaginative, insightful and enlightened. You are confident in your self and your abilities, and don’t need to seek validation outside yourself. Your mental faculties are sharp, and you are finely attuned to both the reality within your mind and physical reality. When unbalanced, this chakra causes vision problems, sinus issues, headaches, nightmares, being overly analytical (dismissing intuitive guidance), confusion, psychological problems, panic attacks and depression. To balance the third eye chakra, spend time outdoors, gazing at the sky; or, with eyes closed, feel the warmth of the sun radiating through you.

The third eye chakra is symbolized by an indigo Anja mandala, light, mind and spirit.

Crown Chakra: the crown chakra is the center for spiritual connection and Source energy. It influences inspiration and idealism. Physically, it influences the central nervous system, pineal gland and brain. When this chakra is healthy, you feel safe knowing that you are an eternal spiritual being having a physical experience. You feel free from ego-driven desires, trust your inner wisdom and unhesitatingly follow your intuitive guidance. When the crown chakra is unbalanced, you feel confused, since it’s unclear to you whether the guidance you are receiving is authentically from the higher self or from your ego. You may suffer from apathy, worry, anxiety, panic attacks, poor mental functioning, headaches and immune disorders. Open the crown chakra through meditation or prayer.

The crown chakra is represented by a violet or white Sahasara mandala and sacred spirits (such as angels).

Many people wear chakra symbols or have them in their home, to heal those chakras and serve as reminders of each chakra’s attributes.
