3 Tips For When There’s Nothing Healthy To Eat

So last week in Vermont we took a stroll into the one store in the whole town (which was actually a bank, laundromat, hardware store, and grocery store combined), and there was nothing organic in the entire store!

Yep, NOTHING was organic. They didn’t have a gluten-free or dairy-free section, and there were no restaurants to go to either.  Just a town BBQ following the Forth of July parade.

Not exactly the healthy, gluten-free, dairy-free, organic, free-range fare that we’re used to at home.

What do you do when you’re away from home and there’s nothing organic or healthy to eat? This is a question I’m frequently asked.

So what did we do? We made the best choices that we could make, and dug in!

Yep, we didn’t eat perfectly that day… and we didn’t beat our self’s up about it either. We eat very healthy at home so that when we are out of town or celebrating, we can afford to eat a little off of our program.

Here’s 3 Tips For When There’s Nothing Healthy To Eat:

1) Eat healthy MOST of the time.

When healthy food is easy and accessible, this is the time to eat well. Then when you’re out of town or want to celebrate, your body can afford to eat a little off your program. Remember, the body is an amazing self-healing organism, and you can always start a cleanse when you get home if you feel like you overdid it.

2) Make the best choices you can.

Make a list of the top foods that make the biggest impact on your health and waistline, and try to stay clear of the worst avengers. For us (and most people), gluten and dairy are the big foods that really make us feel like crap and pack on the pounds quickly, so we try to stay clear of those first.

3) Don’t beat yourself up about it!

It’s not realistic (or healthy) to try to eat perfectly all the time. Part of being in balance is allowing yourself to not be perfect and to enjoy that foods that feed your soul. Occasionally straying from your usual eating plan and enjoying a treat can help to prevent binging or ditching your plan all together later on.  Remember, the name of the game is balance, not all-or-nothing… so at least ENJOY that treat if you’re going to eat it!
